In June of 2023, Jeff Johnston released his 6th album and first solo piano album, Elegy For Armando. Recorded just one week after the passing of jazz piano legend Anthony Armando “Chick” Corea, this album is a poignant collection of originals and standards dedicated to the late great master.

In concert, Jeff will be performing selections from the recording as well as free improvisations and other pieces inspired by and composed by Chick Corea, one of the most influential piano voices in modern jazz.

Two-time Juno nominee Jeff Johnston is a Montreal-based jazz pianist and film composer. His music has been heard on multiple TV projects and he has scored numerous films for the National Film Board of Canada.

His works are infused with alluring harmonies, lush textures, rhythmic inventiveness and spontaneity. Chuck Berg of Jazz Times Magazine wrote “This is music, that while at the contemporary cutting edge, is both immediately and immensely satisfying.” Johnston has recorded and performed with some of the biggest names in jazz, including John Abercrombie, Dave Liebman, Archie Shepp, Kenny Wheeler and most recently with Sheila Jordan.

Along with his busy schedule of performing and composing, Johnston also teaches piano, arranging, and composition at McGill University and has conducted workshops and guest lectured at universities across Canada.

From 2021-2023 he sat on the Board of Directors of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada.
